White Lion Street aspires to rejuvenate a once industrial building in the heart of Angel Town Centre, Islington. Located within such a prime location, the building currently offers little to the streetscape and deserves a new lease of life. Working alongside Artform and Centurion Real Estate, the proposals include a two-storey roof top extension and the reconfiguration and renovation of the existing building, providing two additional residential apartments whilst improving the existing dwellings with features such as lift access to all floors.
Dowen Farmer sought the opportunity to maximise the site, exploring possibilities for proving a high quality architectural scheme that respects the historic and contemporary grain of the surrounding conservation areas.
Located in a heritage-sensitive context and constrained by the existing built form in the surrounding area, the site presented significant challenges for the team to address. The site is a post-war concrete frame multi-storey building with an existing undercroft leading to a rear courtyard which is shared by multiple other parties including a nursery. The rear elevation overlooks the courtyard and hence provided a complex series of overlooking and daylight impacts issues that the team had to resolve with detailed analysis, layout design and screening methodology.

Massing – The proposed extension takes precedent from the common architectural language along White Lion Street. As part of the design process, the team analysed a number of the prominent buildings closest to the proposed development paying particular attention to window proportions, facade rhythm and fenestration, roof-scape and massing.
Context – The massing utilised the varying parapet heights along White Lion Street which increase from East to West, providing an opportunity to develop a distinctive and contextually responsive massing as opposed to a generic extension typology. The outlook from the roof of the existing site facing North and South is unobstructed, therefore the proposed extension has the potential to create high-quality residential units with desirable views across London.
Facade – The proposal expresses a stratification between levels which includes a robust ground floor podium, a rigorously set out grid, and a setback extension further expressed through a change in material. The proportions of the apertures are dictated by strong vertical and horizontal grid lines which vary along the set back upper floors.
