GARNHAM STREET

Crafted exterior – exquisite interior. Two interlocking forms – brick meets stone, solid vs void. Factory made. Uncompromising in quality. Garnham Street resolves a complex site in Stoke Newington to provide 8 units.

Hackney, London.

Garnham Street comprises eight bright and expansive apartments configured across a building of four storeys providing a mixture of one, two or three bedroom apartments. Working with Artform Group and Scenesmith, Garnham Street is a unique design with beautifully crafted interiors, situated just five minutes’ walk from the station and two minutes to the bustling Stoke Newington Church Street.

Facing south onto Garnham Street, the scheme is formed of two interlocking blocks. The concrete core - fabricated from a series of bespoke precast concrete piers - is partially wrapped with a brick façade culminating in a feature goal post. Working closely with Artform Group and the wider team throughout the delivery process, extra care was taken to ensure every detail had been refined to give the highest quality finish.

Concrete Piers – Custom made precast concrete piers became the focal point of Garnham Street. Extruding out from the brick base, these chamfered piers wrap from the outside in.

Fully bespoke production required the rebar frame and moulds to be custom made to suit the brief. A worthy process to offer a uniquely crafted facade that echoes the quality of the interior designed by Scenesmith.

A warm concrete tone was chosen to compliment the brick with timber windows installed adjacent to the concrete elements, with  grey aluminium windows specified for the brick elements. These small details are what makes all the difference.

Setback Brick Base – Creating a hierarchy throughout the scheme was achieved with shifts in the massing and changes in material across the façade. A ground floor setback with interlocking brick and concrete piers above reduced the visual scale of the scheme whilst maintaining a consistent palette.

Precast Concrete Piers – The defining feature of the project. Creating clear definition between sections of the building to assist in reducing bulk, scale and massing.

Internal Concrete Reveals – exposing the structure within the apartments provides a unique and engaging environment to live in, creating a connection between the architecture and the beautifully crafted interiors.

MILK Furniture have beautifully crafted the kitchens with natural timber shelving and bespoke cabinets which chime harmoniously with integrated appliances and terrazzo worktops. A light touch has been applied to the internal fittings,  allowing the materiality of the apartments to take centre stage. Switch plates, sockets and ironmongery are all offered in a matt black finish, while the bathrooms are replete with vibrant, warm terrazzo, plus concrete basins by cement and black brassware.

Each apartment within Garnham Street has its own private outdoor space. The ground floor apartments have private patios, whilst the first and second floor apartments have their own south-facing balconies. Both third-floor apartments  have terraces providing wonderful, elevated views of Stoke Newington and the city skyline beyond.
